Once upon a time in PEI.

This is the first article in a series chronicling my weird and wonderful experiences with the unknown. Some will see these as fiction and that’s ok. I know what my truth is. May everyone find the wonder and mystery in the world and life.

If you are from PEI, chances are you have heard of the Devils elbow. This is my experience with this weird and wonderful place.

I was fifteen years old, and I had gone over to PEI with my boyfriend, P, who was in his early twenties, to visit his family for the weekend. Our second night there, we walked from his fathers house go to his aunts house to visit. As we were walking down this very dark road, P started telling me that the area was called the Devils Elbow and that there had been reports of cars being suspended in the air for several seconds at the top of the hill before being able to descend, along with people loosing time and other strange events. Needless to say I was a little concerned, seeing as the road had almost no lights, and it was a dark night. I had already experienced multiple events with the unknown, and really had no desire for any repeat experiences.

Several minutes had passed, and I started to relax and enjoy the nature around me. We kept walking and I noticed lights in the woods to my right. I didn’t pay much attention to them at first. After a few minutes, I noticed that two red lights, like eyes, higher than me, were keeping pace with us. They stayed the same distance apart and the same height, never wavering. I mentioned them to P, and he glanced over and said they were fireflies. I said that I had never seen fireflies behave like that before, but I let it go. We kept walking and I kept glancing over to where those red lights kept pace with us. After several more minutes, I mentioned to P again that the lights were still following us. He again said that they were fireflies and not to worry about them. I let it go for another while, but the lights were still there. By this time it had been over fifteen minutes that these red glowing lights had kept pace with us in the forest. I moved to walk down the middle of the road and P chided me for being foolish. After several more minutes, the road came to a curve and the forest ended at his aunts yard. The red lights stopped at the edge of the forest at waited there. Throughout the night, while we visited with his aunt, I would peek out and see if those lights were still there. They were. I kept mentioning it to P, but he dismissed it. They waited for us all night, and followed us the whole walk back to his fathers house. Always just at the edge of the forest, always watching and following. P insisted the whole way back that I was being silly and that it was just fireflies. When we arrived at his fathers place, the red lights again waited at the edge of the forest. I didn’t check to see how long they stayed once we got in the house and there were not there in the morning.

For many years, I was very freaked out by that experience. It wasn’t until after telling a doctor (who also practiced alternative medicine) I had been working with in Calgary that my views changed. He asked me why I had thought that being was there for me? Could it have been possible that it had been there for someone else, and I just happened to be able to see it? Or could it have just been curious about us and the fact that I could see it? That was something I had never considered and it changed my perspective immensely and gave me a sense of comfort and peace I had not had in years. This also allowed me to be open and changed how I dealt with future experiences, but those are stories for another day. More to come soon and I look forward to sharing my stories with you all. Take care and many blessings to everyone.
